Federal budget coming

The federal budget is coming soon, but already we know that it will be at least over Eighteen Billion Dollars in the red.  Sounds pretty scary if you think about it, but there are some interesting notes, that it seems the Media aren’t explaining.

  1. This estimate is based on just restoring funding to existing programs, that were either cut or passed off to the Provinces for funding.  You know, things like Health Care, Education, and other agencies.
  2. This estimate does not account for any of the programs that were promised during the election by the Liberals, which does mean that more than likely the deficit is gonna be a real whopper.

That all being said, here is one important note.  The New Liberal Government isn’t attempting to hide this information, or to even downplay it. Nor are they back pedalling on implementing their promises for things like help to the Middle Class, or in funding important infrastructure projects.

But what truly makes me feel hopeful, is that they aren’t playing the “blame game” that we have heard so often from our Political Leaders, most notably the Harper Conservatives. Nor are we hearing just how much of that Eighteen Billion dollars is due to fixing the “Harper Creative bookkeeping” that supposedly claims we had a Two Billion Dollar surplus.

You know, I learned a long time ago, that when things are good, you put money aside for those ‘rainy days‘ and when those “rainy days” do come, you dig into that fund, or even borrow money to keep things humming along.  That went well in both business and in the home, and is this really any different?

Consider that our health care is in disarray, that our education is suffering, that even our basic freedoms are at risk, from sub standard funding of our Police and Military, and tell me again how we should ignore all that, just to say “Hey the budget is balanced”.

Course that is also a fallacy, because up until now, and at least for now, a Budget is not written in stone, or based even on hard real facts. It is an “Estimate at Best” at what will be needed for the upcoming year, but ask yourself this one simple question:

Do you know what is going to happen in the coming year?

Will Oil prices rise and will the Loonie climb out of the cellar?

How about will there be a major earthquake in BC?

What about a massive power failure in our Electric Grid?

How about the need to provide refuge for thousands of displaced persons from foreign wars?

All those subsequent questions show just why a budget today is just that, a hopeful projection based on a guess, a hunch, without any real substance, because if one is honest, there is NO ONE who can predict what the future holds.

What truly gives me hope though, isn’t that we are spending during these “rainy days” but that at least the New Liberal Government is being upfront about it, and not in full panic mode, like the previous Government acted. No knee jerk reactions, no band-aid approaches, so far.

And that is not just hopeful but also comforting.
