Hey Jim, so Donald, Ted, Hillary or Bernie

Posted by Moaning Mary on March 5, 2016 in Politics, World Affairs with Comments closed |
Running for election

It’s been awhile since we talked Jim, even though often I think of you and miss hearing your voice, your thoughts, your advice. You were such a good friend, and since you passed away just over two years ago, there is rarely a day that goes by, when I don’t think of you, and wish you were still here on this crazy planet.

And listening to the latest political news out of your Country, I wonder what you would be thinking, as you watch the likes of Donald Trump, Marc Rubio, Ted Cruz seek the golden ring of Nominee for the Republican Party.  I wonder, would you be disappointed that your former Governor, Jed Bush, failed in his bid? Or would you be smiling a little?

Bernie Sanders, Hillary Clinton, Donald Trump, Ted Cruz

Somehow I think you wouldn’t be all that disappointed in his loss, but I can just hear our phone conversations now as you see “The Donald” and “Texas Ted” vie for the chance to live in the White House come this November.  You know Jim, I have a hunch I would be needing to up my minutes of my phone, as I am certain we would be in constant debate over the state of Politics in the good ol US of A.

Bet I would have to buy extra popcorn for our late night sittings outside, this summer when you would be here for your yearly pilgrimage to our little corner of Heaven on Earth.  Course you would be enjoying how finally Canada turfed its own version of GW Bush and the religious wing nuts, that now dominate US politics and life.

The DonaldI can see you wince too, as you hear “The Donald” talk about immigrants, Muslims, and the use of Torture being ramped up. As a former Viet Nam veteran, a survivor of Agent Orange, I can just hear your voice stridently talking about how your Government is failing, when the likes of “The Donald” or “Texas Ted” can be the front-runners.  Or even how anyone who says he would deny Muslims entry to the US, when the United States was founded by Immigrants.

How did it all happen Jim?

Truthfully it boggles my mind, that the likes of Ted Cruz or Donald Trump or even Hillary Clinton could be so close to becoming President of your Country. I mean Ted is merely a slightly paler version of Donald, and Hillary has so many unanswered questions about her ethics, her morality, that it makes me wonder how they can even be considered as Presidential Material.

The Republicans were about small government, about strict adherence to the US Constitution, and yet here are the two top contenders, mixing Politics with Religion. How can that even be close to the old principles of the Republican Party?

I simply do not get how they can talk about torture being acceptable, in any form, no matter what. Surely the principles of due process still exist, or maybe that was just one more illusion. Honestly, do Americans really believe that the use of torture is a valid way of self-protection?

The whole Illegal Immigration thing confuses me too Jim.

How is it that so many businesses in the USA actually do not know if their employees are citizens or not? Surely a tip-off has to be that these illegal immigrants are willing to work for less money than most other people? Yet for some reason these Corporations are blameless, and the number of illegal immigrants just keeps growing? How is a fence going to stop that flow?

Trump the entertainer, or demagogue?I know when we debate issues, we get heated, but really, calling people names, making innuendo about the size of their Penis, is not what you and I call informed debate, is it?

Yet so many Millions of Americans are enthralled by the hate talk, the jabs, that have dominated the Republican Debates, it makes me wonder, do Americans really have their minds in the gutter that much?  I mean the way they rail against Pornography, but flock to see their future leaders talk dirty on the public airwaves, makes me wonder.

You know I have no objection to Porn, but does it make sense to claim a guy has a small schlong?

Shouldn’t the debate really be about standing up for values that matter, like protecting all citizens from bigotry, from racism? How can a front-runner like Donald Trump not know who David Duke is and when called on it, says it was a faulty ear piece and he didn’t hear the question properly?

I mean really Jim, how can anyone believe such an obvious pile of BS?

Yet so many Americans, seem to endorse the idea that only the White Man is entitled to those rights. I read that even a Muslim is voting for Donald, because of his economic policies. I mean really, the man proposes to ship all Muslims not natural citizens, out of the country, but this guy is willing to ignore that racists view, simply because Donald might improve the US Economy?

And we can’t forget “Texas Ted” and his belief that only those who believe in his brand of God, should be empowered and protected. That all others are well, going to purgatory anyhow, so why grant them any rights now?  Honestly, the guy is unbelievable, and here again, so many seem to love him. I mean remember the last Texan in the White House? The war in Iraq continues, so does the war in Afghanistan, and now there is Syria and Turkey, and who knows where it will lead to next, all because George wanted to get rid of Saadam.  How many hundreds of billions did Halliburton make, and worse than that, how many thousands are now dead as a result of his trumped-up war on Iraq?

Like really Jim, we have more irate Muslims, grabbing rifles, wrapping bombs around their chests, plotting ways to murder hundreds of innocent people, all because George W Bush wanted to take Iraqi Oil and make his buddies richer than they already were. You were right when you said there was no weapons of mass destruction, but no one else, not even dear sweet Hillary disagreed. Funny how so many keep forgetting that too, isn’t it?

Which also makes me wonder, how can people who live in states like South Carolina that is mainly Military show such support for the likes of Hilary and Donald?  I mean do they really want to be constantly fighting wars? It seems so, the way they supported those two, and lets face it, elect either of them and well, the war in Iraq won’t be over anytime soon. I still don’t get how Obama has allowed it to continue, after all isn’t he the Commander-in-Chief?  Why can’t he simply order the “High Command” to bring home the troops by such and such a date?

Sure I get it isn’t quite that simple, but honestly the majority of Americans want the endless war to end, so why can’t he do it? Then I guess it is as you said, the military complex just has too much clout in DC, and hey, as long as the billions keep flowing in, they can keep that war going. After all, it isn’t like they have to bribe Obama, they just need to buy off enough Senators and Congressmen to achieve that goal.  And with all those billions, well, no wonder nothing has been done to actually end that war.

There was an interesting piece somewhere, that said that all the candidates, save Bernie Sanders, were all Millionaires, and yet they all were long time public servants, well other than “The Donald”.  Makes you wonder how people like Clinton and Rubio and Cruz could get wealthy when supposedly your business is conducted in a blind trust. I mean the Clinton’s walked out of the White House and while supposedly nearly bankrupt, bought themselves a multi-million dollar plus home in New York state, and are now funding a second run at the Presidency for Hillary.

Like you said, follow the money, but give Hillary and Donald credit, they sure do know how to hide that trail pretty good, and worse, when discrepancies are noted, brought to light, no one seems to actually believe the numbers in front of them. Instead they keep on supporting them, just like so many still approve of Bill Clinton, who lied under oath. Like honestly, who cares who he was sleeping with, it is about him lying under oath, or should have been. Funny how so many of your Countrymen slide that under the rug.  I guess being a liar is okay.

We had that here too, with Stephen Harper, but hey, least we got rid of him, and am not fawning over those who seek to replace him, yet in your neck of the woods, it seems like you got rid of one and now are loading up the replacement pool with those who sure can spin a good yarn, where truth doesn’t even make it into the yarn.

I just don’t understand all the hate there is in your Country. If it isn’t against Muslims, it’s against Mexicans, or Blacks, or some other Minority like Gays.  It just seems so many are angry over there, I know you are, but you don’t hate people. Like I told you when you were last here, you are not the typical American, and I thank God, for that.

I really miss our talks, our visits, and I wish you were still around for them. It would be fun to be out in our “whisper room” and munching on popcorn, while solving the world’s problems. Then too, I would be having fun (at your expense) talking about politics and how if Donald or Hillary won, that we would gladly offer you the spare room.  Heck, we’d even sponsor you for citizenship if you wanted, and yeah I know, you might be tempted if Donald Trump managed to pull it off, and become the next President. Though knowing you, I know you would stick it out, hoping your fellow Americans would wake up and get rid of the guy at the next election. Assuming of course, there were still free elections in the USA after 2016.

Trump and Clinton in the delegate lead

But will that happen?

third place candidate Marc RubioYou know, the 200 minutes on my phone for anytime talking would be long gone by now, but then maybe I would just use David’s phone to talk to you with. Least his plan has unlimited minutes, and we could discuss Bernie Sanders and maybe even Mark Rubio.

Isn’t he the Governor, or was, for  your state of Florida? I mean would he be a better choice than either Cruz or Trump if those were the three you had to choose from? And I wonder, what would you think of about how suddenly Mitt Romney is out there, talking about stopping Donald Trump?  Think there could be a revolt at the nomination convention?

Are Americans that easily confused and misguided?

I leave you for now, with one last thought.  Where are all the other Presidents on the races? I mean surely George H Bush, his bumbling son George W, have some thoughts on who should lead the Republicans in November?  How about your friend the peanut farmer, Jimmy Carter? You would think he might have something to say about Donald or Ted?

Electoral Reform or Regression?

Posted by Moaning Mary on February 27, 2016 in Federal, Politics with Comments closed |

Byelection called for four ridingsIt seems to be a hot topic these days, a change in our electoral process, so that “first past the post” does not apply, but instead goes to either a “proportional” or a “ranked ballot” system.

Just the names alone send shivers up my spine, because the reality is, why shouldn’t it be the one who garners the most vote in a riding, be declared the winner?

IF a political party can capture the majority of ridings, then shouldn’t they form the Government? Why do we have to change that, and No, the argument that the current system makes us feel Dis Enfranchised, is to me, utter BULLSHIT.

For the last ten years, I have been on the losing end, seeing a Harper Government take hold of Parliament, and I grant that it has nearly destroyed our Country, but that does not mean we should necessarily change HOW WE VOTE and HOW THOSE VOTES COUNT.

Proportional representation is based on the principle that the seats a party has in a legislature should reflect the percentage of votes cast for that party. So if a party earns 39% of the votes, it should get roughly 39% of the seats. In this way, proportional systems also aim to provide representation for most voters. (source: Every Vote Counts)

My problem with that is all of make choices, and that party that has the better platform, the more policies that appeal to a majority of votes, should be the one being elected.  Alternative views are those represented by the Opposition Parties.  In addition, consider that if you go by proportional votes, we wind up with a Parliament that is gridlocked, because in a multi party Parliament, it is doubtful any party will assume a 50 +1 majority.

I want a government that will act, not be hogtied to finding ways to compromise the very policies, principles that I voted for.

The argument is that those who didn’t get their choice, should somehow be allowed to have their votes elect someone who they believe in.  That is like asking the guy who finishes second in a relay race to share in the first prize money, or to have the team that lost the Grey Cup to somehow have the Cup engraved with their name as Co-Winner.

Plus, to say that those votes cast for the other parties, that failed to win, are somehow, unimportant, is really rather insulting.

The thing is, we don’t need to change the voting system, we just need to ensure that people vote, and you know, it really isn’t a “right” but voting is a privilege. It is what has been bought and paid for, by the blood of Canadians, whether it be on the Plains of Abraham, in the trenches of France, on the beaches of Normandy, or the mountains of Korea.  We paid for that privilege, and to now say that every vote doesn’t count the same, is really a slap in the face for those who fought and died for this country.

My other objection is that I am tired of compromise. If enough of us vote for a Party, that obtains a Majority, then why shouldn’t those policies be set into place for the life of their rule? Why should it be “compromised” simply because a certain number of people voted for “other polices”

Then there is the whole Majority vs Minority government. You know we had several Minority Governments that did good stuff, while adhering to their platform, things like oh, say Universal Health Care.

According to the so-called experts, voters will increase by under 10% if we change our system, which makes me wonder, what is stopping them now?

If we truly wish to have a Government elected by a true Majority of Voters, then we need to MAKE VOTING MANDATORY, which serious financial repercussions if one fails to vote.

Only then will we actually have a consensus on what ALL CANADIANS want.

My other complaint / objection is that all these so-called experts, disagree with a public referendum. They claim it will not help decide upon a real change, that it will be subject to mis-understanding.  In other words, they say we, the general voting public, are too stupid to understand what the new system is about.

Holding a referendum is unnecessary. Evidence shows that a referendum would not necessarily generate meaningful deliberation. It could turn consideration of complex issues and questions into black-and-white choices that polarize Canadians. Holding a referendum also sets up a process that would be biased toward the status quo, and yet the government has already promised to fix our broken electoral system. So now is the time to develop a process to consult Canadians about the best way to do that. (source: Every Voter Counts)

Sorry folks but that sounds to me like you have a lot to hide, that what you claim is not based on fact, or is truly about insuring that we elect a government that we want.  Majority Rules for a reason, but in our entire history, the voice of the minority is always heard. That is why we have Opposition Parties.

Note too, that is plural, “Opposition Parties” which is something that allows us to have a varied choice, not an “either or” choice such as the Americans have.

Like would you really like your only choice to be a Donald Trump or Hilary Clinton?

We need to stand firm, and REJECT the notion that somehow our system is outdated, broken. I did not vote for, or approve of the way the Harper Gang governed out Country, but it didn’t make me look for a new way to prevent them from gaining power. Instead it made me go out more, and talk more about the NDP, the Liberals, and yes, the Green Party. We need choices, not a new way to count our votes.

Cheque is in the mail

Posted by Moaning Mary on February 25, 2016 in Federal, Politics with Comments closed |
putting politics aside

With all the talk about how poor Alberta is due to the artificial devastation of the Oil Industry, I wonder if anyone has thought to ask Rose Ambrose and her Conservative Brethren just how quickly would a Stephen Harper Government be sending Alberta’s NDP government a cheque for 250 Million Dollars?

Maybe someone should tell our new Finance Minister to NOT send the money, and that way he can trim a quarter of a billion dollars off his projected budget deficit.  After all, it isn’t like Alberta went Liberal Red in the last election, and if one was to follow the lead of the previous government, only those areas colored Conservative Blue would get any help, the rest can just well, go to Hell.  Least that was the Harper Way, and apparently not much has changed with the Conservative under the temporary leadership of Rose Ambrose.

Oh wait, one thing has changed.

THE LIBERALS WON THE ELECTION!

Spend or Save | What really counts

Posted by Moaning Mary on February 24, 2016 in Business, Federal with Comments closed |
Federal budget coming

The federal budget is coming soon, but already we know that it will be at least over Eighteen Billion Dollars in the red.  Sounds pretty scary if you think about it, but there are some interesting notes, that it seems the Media aren’t explaining.

  1. This estimate is based on just restoring funding to existing programs, that were either cut or passed off to the Provinces for funding.  You know, things like Health Care, Education, and other agencies.
  2. This estimate does not account for any of the programs that were promised during the election by the Liberals, which does mean that more than likely the deficit is gonna be a real whopper.

That all being said, here is one important note.  The New Liberal Government isn’t attempting to hide this information, or to even downplay it. Nor are they back pedalling on implementing their promises for things like help to the Middle Class, or in funding important infrastructure projects.

But what truly makes me feel hopeful, is that they aren’t playing the “blame game” that we have heard so often from our Political Leaders, most notably the Harper Conservatives. Nor are we hearing just how much of that Eighteen Billion dollars is due to fixing the “Harper Creative bookkeeping” that supposedly claims we had a Two Billion Dollar surplus.

You know, I learned a long time ago, that when things are good, you put money aside for those ‘rainy days‘ and when those “rainy days” do come, you dig into that fund, or even borrow money to keep things humming along.  That went well in both business and in the home, and is this really any different?

Consider that our health care is in disarray, that our education is suffering, that even our basic freedoms are at risk, from sub standard funding of our Police and Military, and tell me again how we should ignore all that, just to say “Hey the budget is balanced”.

Course that is also a fallacy, because up until now, and at least for now, a Budget is not written in stone, or based even on hard real facts. It is an “Estimate at Best” at what will be needed for the upcoming year, but ask yourself this one simple question:

Do you know what is going to happen in the coming year?

Will Oil prices rise and will the Loonie climb out of the cellar?

How about will there be a major earthquake in BC?

What about a massive power failure in our Electric Grid?

How about the need to provide refuge for thousands of displaced persons from foreign wars?

All those subsequent questions show just why a budget today is just that, a hopeful projection based on a guess, a hunch, without any real substance, because if one is honest, there is NO ONE who can predict what the future holds.

What truly gives me hope though, isn’t that we are spending during these “rainy days” but that at least the New Liberal Government is being upfront about it, and not in full panic mode, like the previous Government acted. No knee jerk reactions, no band-aid approaches, so far.

And that is not just hopeful but also comforting.

The Netflix Crackdown on Cross Border Viewing

Posted by Moaning Mary on February 10, 2016 in Business, Recreation with Comments closed |
crackdown on illegal viewing

It has been in the news lately, on how Netflix is cracking down on its subscribers who use VPN networks, to get around the border barriers, that prevent the full Netflix catalogue of shows and movies from being seen in certain countries, like Canada.  I get the reason too, I mean the producers only give certain licenses, based on countries where their product is viewed.

Bottom line, it is about those content providers, wanting a larger share of the pie if their stuff is seen in Australia, or Canada, or the UK, or anywhere but in the good old US of A.  It is about GREED, not about reaching a wider audience, and it never has been.

Sure some Countries have different laws, but in this so called Global Economy, it just seem crazy that content providers aren’t reaching out to other countries, to have their stuff viewed. And you know, my Mother used to tell me, that a half of a loaf of bread was better than none.

So why is it that these Corproate Big Wigs think it is better to restrict who can see their stuff, unless they pay a bigger stipend for that privelege?

Now I get too, that trying to circumvent the border restrictions is not legal, and yes it is stealing, which I guess is one of the reasons why I don’t use a VPN. I mean I have nothing to hide, and honestly I just don’t need the hassle of losing my entertainment, simply so I can watch more but honestly this whole “Netflix Cracking Down” is not about protecting Content Producers, but about MONEY.

Technology has moved way past the current set of laws, governing such things as Copyright Protection, and about Restricting Content.

The internet was created or one simple thing:

To accelerate the free and open sharing of information.

Isn’t it time our lawmakers realized that, and drafter appropriate legislation to insure that we, the people, actually can find and share information without archaic restrictions, or an invasion of our basic right of privacy?  After all, that is exactly what a VPN does, it helps protect our privacy, and while I don’t think we should be ‘stealing’ content, I also don’t believe we should be restricting what we can see, or read, based on borders.

There are NO BORDERS on the Internet Highway, other than man made.

Netflix isn’t the evil culprit either, but it is the greed of the Content Producers that is fueling this supposed “crack down” but what about all the Corporation that steal our personal information, so they better market to us?  Seriously, everytime you go shopping or browsing online, you will soon find ads for those businesses on sites like CBC, like the Weather Network.

That is why there are VPN services, to help us fight Corporations that steal our private online activity.

WHERE IS THE CRACKDOWN ON THAT?

Update | Subway Sooke

Posted by Moaning Mary on February 5, 2016 in Being a Sookite, Business with Comments closed |
Subway in Sooke experience

It pays to voice your dissatisfaction.

After we had that less than enjoyable Subway Experience, we also listed our complain on the Subway feedback form, and surprisingly, got a rather quick response from the owner of the Sooke Subway.  Kind of nice to actually have an owner get back to a dissatisfied customer so quickly.

Not only did he send us some coupons to basically reimburse us, but he also took the time to explain and apologize for the mistake. That in itself was refreshing, and YES, we have since returned and noticed that the problem is corrected.

Kind of nice, now if only other businesses would follow his example, one might actually get value for their business.

Sooke Subway Experience

Posted by Moaning Mary on January 16, 2016 in Being a Sookite, Business with Comments closed |

poorly made subLast night (Jan 14/16), opted to grab us a subway delight, rather than cooking.

Man was that a mistake

Subway Foot Long subs aren’t as cheap as the MacDonalds cheap burger ($1.99) and well, for the price they charge, it should be done the way you like, not how the so-called server wants to do it.

Neither of us like a salad in our Sandwich, but David nearly got one, before he caught her on it, and the response was “it’s the default” which is kind of bogus. I mean why bother to ask what garnishes you want, if you are going to ignore those requests?

Sure she ‘wiped the lettuce’ off, but honestly, that is rather annoying. Then when it comes to adding mayonnaise, well did you know that the default for that is “Light mayonnaise”?  I sure didn’t know that.

Nor did she remove it, after all, no one specified ‘regular mayonnaise’ on their request.

Oh it gets better too!

I asked for double meat on mine, which is a bit more filling, and unlike how it’s always been, I got mine stacked on both sides of the bun, the garnishes then dumped in between, including the bacon. Fortunately I didn’t get any lettuce or else there would have been no way to close the sandwich.

I have no idea if I got “light” or “regular” mayo, but boy talk about skimpy garnishes.

If I didn’t see her put onions on, and pickles, I would have never known they were on the sandwich. Though I should have asked for more, I was distracted at the time, talking to David.

Then closed went the foot long, with meat on both sides of the bread, all the garnishes (pickles, onions, bacon, mayo, pepper, parmesan cheese, swiss cheese slices, and pepper) wedged in between.

Now I don’t know about you, but to me a sandwich is layered.

  1. Bottom of bun
  2. Filling (meat, chicken, whatever)
  3. Bacon
  4. Garnishes (pickles, onions, etc)
  5. mayonnaise and other ‘dressings’ if applicable
  6. Top of bun

Sure ain’t what the 11 year Subway Sandwich Artist gave me.  And frankly, I had to put more mayonnaise on it, when I got home, as the sandwich was just way too dry.  After all, all the garnishes and dressing was stuck in the middle of the whole thing.

All I know is that we paid $25 for our two foot long sandwiches, and neither of us enjoyed them one bit. It was dinner, and we couldn’t be arsed to go back, though in hindsight, we should have refused to accept the two sandwiches.  They were not done “our way” or even close.

But if you don’t know what the default is, such as in mayonnaise, how are you expected to ask for the right one?  Plus, well when did “light” become a default? All the other times we ordered our subs, the default was “regular” which makes me wonder:

Who was doing it wrong?

All them other people, or the so-called 11 year veteran?

The Loonie Plummets so maybe it is time to Buy Canadian

Posted by Moaning Mary on January 13, 2016 in Business, The Daily Grind with Comments closed |
corporate money grab

the weak dollar goes lowerSo let us all panic, the Loonie has hit a low, in the last decade, but you know what, I remember when the Loonie was pegged, not free floating, and well, I sure was able to fill up the tank of the  old car, food was reasonably priced, and oh yeah, I could actually find Canadian Made products.  There was the T. Eaton Company, Hudson’s Bay, Zellers, Woolworths, and other CANADIAN BUSINESSES doing just fine, with the Canadian Buck pegged at about 10cents lower than the Yankee Buck.

Farmers sold their goods, even top grade steak cuts were affordable, oh and you know what?

A single income family could actually save money to buy a house, and even go on the odd vacation.

[hero heading=”Loonie Plummets” tagline=”Time to just BUY CANADIAN”]Maybe the low Loonie is a sign, that we should stop all this Global Economy crapola, and start to look inwards. Like maybe build up Canadian Industries, to provide us with a cheaper and better quality (hopefully) of products than we get now from China, and other Foreign arenas.[/hero]

What I don’t get though, is prices for locally grown food has gone up, and yet they don’t trade in Yankee Dollars, and well, it just seems to me that it is just one more example of GREED.  Honestly, we EXPORT GOODS for the most part, including food, like Beef, Pork, Chicken, so how come WE pay more?  If we are shipping it out, then let us ship less out, buy local, and save a buck.

Maybe we should think about that?

Hewlitt Packard | Nothing but a royal Rip Off and Scam

Posted by Moaning Mary on January 6, 2016 in Business with Comments closed |
Perpetrating Fraud on the Consumer

[alert size=”alert-block” variation=”alert-info”]Extend = to increase the length or duration of; lengthen; prolong:[/alert]

I have enjoyed my Hewlett Packard computer since I got it back in December of 2014, and I use it for business. So back in October of 2015 the HP Assistant program began to notify me that my warranty was about to expire (Dec 2014) and finally in November, they gave me an offer, I thought I couldn’t refuse.

It offered a Two Year warranty extension, for $90 plus a promo code that would give me a 30% discount. Being a tight wad, I figured okay, 2 years of hassle free service (should I need it) for roughly $30 a year was a good deal.

Hewlitt Packard misleading extending warranties

I clicked on the pop up from the HP Assistant, went to the shop, that had the qty entered, the price and then space to enter the promo code. I did that, and proceeded to checkout, entering all it needed and there it was, I was now safe for another two years, for a reasonable price.  Right?

WRONG !

It turns out, that for starters, the program never entered the 30% discount, and in the HP Assistant, it showed my warranty had been extended for only 1 Year, not the Two (2) years it offered.

I entered into the support nightmare, and finally found a page where I could dispute the warranty date showing. It said too, that I would hear back within One (1) business day the result of my dispute.  NADA!  So much for that avenue of support. (Never did get a reply either).

Next up was to contact their live chat feature, where I was told that my “extended” warranty was applied, but that it began when I purchased the Computer.  In other words, a year earlier, so yes, the date showing was correct. My EXTENDED Warranty, that was for 2 years, suddenly shrunk to being valid for One (1) Year.

After a lengthy talk, I was told that someone would contact me within 24 to 48 hours, to discuss a refund, after I said that I would CHARGEBACK the purchase. Only when mentioning that magic word, did the subject of a refund even come up from the live chat rep.

Amazing isn’t it?  So the process continued until today, when lo and behold I did get a callback, course not at the convenient time, that had been set up.

This time I was told that really, there was nothing amiss, that I had purchased an “Extended Warranty” that clearly began the date I purchased the computer.  Again, using that magic word “Chargeback” got me to talking to a customer associate, who once again parotted the corporate line, but did say that she would authorize a refund. (Again, after use of that magic word) and then she begins the litany of how it goes.

  1. An email is sent, informing they are deactivating the warranty, and when that is confirmed, then they will initiate a refund to my credit card.
  2. Once the deactivation has been confirmed, they will then initiate the refund, within 24 to 48 Business Hours. (Did you catch that? Hours, not Days)

In other words, if they were open 10 hours a day, they are saying that within 2½ days to 5 days they will start the process to refund my card with the funds.  Seriously, they said “Business Hours” and when I commented on that, she said well they are open for long hours each “business” day.

If this is what Hewlett Packard calls “Customer Service”, well they can Kiss my ‘you know what’ as it really isn’t. First they misrepresent their “extended warranty” feature, then hassle the customer who is complains with links to pages on their website and how it is all clearly stated.  BULL!

I began in business, at the tender age of 11 years old, helping in the family store, and here I am now, fifty years later, and I shake my head. How can any business expect customer loyalty or support, with tactics like the one’s Hewlitt Packard are using?

It is like my anti-virus program, that provides you with one year of updates, when you buy the program. Then the coming year, they tell you that your renewal is $50 but if you pay $75 you can get Two Years of Updates, only that first year is the one that has gone. I mean seriously, talk about ripping off the consumer.  I know I bought a two-year upgrade for a program, and well, the expiry date of that program is dated TWO YEARS FROM NOW.  It didn’t go back to when I first bought the program, it ADDED THE TWO YEARS.

However, that isn’t what Hewlitt Packard does.  IT charges you for two years, but only delivers ONE YEAR.

I don’t know how they can get away with it, or how they even exist today, but then times have indeed changed since I was first introduced to selling to the general public.  Course back then, my Mom and Dad told me, the customer is King, you do your best to make them happy.

Man, how business evolved and changed, and you know, it isn’t for the better.
